Unit 6

Maritime history


Ships and the sea are very important in Britain. Britain once had the biggest navy in the world.
Even today, many ships are used for exporting and impoting goods in containers. Some people also travel by ship to go on holiday or for business.
The Queen Mary 2 is a very big sailing ship. It sails from Southampton to New York.
You can visit a museum of maritime history in Liverpol. Outside the museum, there are ships in the docks.
Inside you can find out about life on sailing ships. Young men had to climb the rigging to put up the sails. This was a dangerous job.

Unit 4

The law

The most famous police station in Britain is new Scotland Yard in London. But there are police stations all over the country. For most people the police are the face of the law.
A machines scans finger prints electronically and compares the
m with the national police database.
Suspects can be kept in the cells at the police station for several hours.
In the curt the the magistrates listen to evidence from the po
lice and witnesses.
They them decide if the person is guilty or not guilty.

Supermarkets

Supermarkets are an important part of daily life in Britain. Tesco is the biggest supermarket. It's got nearly 2.000 shops in Britain and is the third biggest supermarket in the world.
In the larger supermarkets you can buy just about anything.
The very big supermarkets are usually on the edge of towns and most people drive to them.
A lot of people now use online shopping.
Small shops in towns and villages are closing because supermarkets can sell the same things cheaper.
Many supermarkets are open 24 hours a day and seven days a week
. On Sundays shops can only open for 5 hours.

Soap operas

The most popular British soap operas are Eastenders and Coronation Street. These are popular dramas about the lives of ordinary people. There are usually three to five episodes each week. Many people are addicted to soap operas. They even buy soap operas magazine. There are also websites for all the main soap operas. The British soap operas are very interesting.

Unit 1

Scotland

Scotland is one of the four main regions of Britain. It o ccupies about one third of the total land area in Britain. Most people live in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Scotland has got some unusual traditions. Scottish men sometimes wear a kilt rather than trousers. There is a traditional Scottish sport called the Highland Games. Scotland is famous for its whisky. Whisky is a strong spirit made from barley, yeast and water.
